Highlights of 2007

After reading the blog entry by Edmund Tay and his year in review, think it is time I recapped some of the highlights of 2007 before the clock stuck twelve.

* First big event of the year was my sister's wedding on 1st May! It not only made the news in the whole extended family as the event of the year, but it also made the news literally! I believe the first part of the year was a trying time for my sis, as she struggled to adapt to her new job and also preparations for her wedding. For that, Nis, I salute you! Personally, I wondered how I would deal with my dearest sister leaving home and starting a new life but I think I was well-prepared for it and maybe, I couldn't wait to have the whole house to myself! Hee!

* Then, Joe proposed to me on his birthday, 20th May! He was really sweet, he composed a song and arranged a surprise for me at the Love Sculpture at Park Mall. It was at this same spot that we first celebrated our 'attachment'. Then, wedding celebrations went into full swing, finding a restaurant, bridal studio, house...

* In August, I was informed that I was one of the finalists of the eBay-Home & Decor contest. For that, I would be given $3500 to revamp a room of my choice, my sister's study at her new place. It was an intense two months or so sourcing furnishings online, hoping to get the best bargains and putting everything together. The photo shoot at my sister's place was fun and gave me an insight of the world of decor magazines!

* Around late August, Joe and me put in the deposit for our very own place, also at Hougang! We are very very happy with the place we bought and it's very spacious and worth every cent!

*
Around then, our Aljunied Crescent home was also sold and we got ourselves ready for the family's big move to Rio Vista at Hougang in November.

*
Was given many opportunities to learn new things on the job. My biggest achievement would be executing the Heart-to-Heart campaign visuals for the Bank's branches. It was my first time experiencing a commercial photo shoot and it was really fun! I never knew so much background work went into the advertisements we see everyday. And at my very first go, it was six different shoots over a span of three days! And of course, the opportunity to work on large format ads for the North-East line. Am really thankful for the opportunities and hoping for more exciting projects in the year to come!

HAPPY NEW YEAR ONE AND ALL! To end off, read the following sms I'm sure some of you received:

A new year
A new start
A new chapter
A new beginning
Forget the old
Cherish the new

Renovation progress

Renovation at Hougang Nest is now in full swing. Hacking of the floors and walls is completed and tiling is in progress. But, dun think we reached this point so quickly. In fact, we had many meetings with our contractor, Richie of Rich Ideas beforehand. We first met up with him with our floor plan and a concise plan of what we wanted in each room, even down to the kind of furniture, wall colour, etc. And to get to that point, we had to browse through countless decor pages, tear our pages of what we liked, discuss together and list down neatly what we wanted for easy reference. Richie then went back to do up a quote based on our requirements, working out a 3D plan and tweaking some things. We then had to go through the quote with him again, decide what we want or not want, arrange a visit to the place though the whole transaction wasn't completed yet, wait for him to revert and the cycle continues.

Before reno started, we also went to settle the following:

1) Decide on our tiling
Richie brought us to a huge showroom called Soon Bee Huat at Toh Guan Road. It's really huge and displayed all kinds of tiles from Malaysia, China, Italy, Spain.. We spent some 2 hours there deciding on floor and wall tiles, the range there is mind-blowing! Just a tip, dun get for too light a colour for the living room floor cos any dust, dirt, hair will be very obvious. Try to get those with a slight pattern as it helps to mask the dirt particles!

2) Decide on our lightings
Went to Chan Huat at Balestier again. Since we were using mainly downlights, there was not much need to decide on special light fixtures. We are leaving the table lamps and other special ambience lighting to later since Chan Huat is quite limited in unique designs. We also bought our ceiling fans from here. Btw, do always ask for better pricing. I suspect they mark-up the pricing pretty much cos suppliers also lower prices when I ask. With a little more coaxing, you can get even bigger discounts.

3) Decide on toilet accessories
Went to the highly recommended Royal Fanco at Jalan Besar Road for toilet accessories. Before that, we checked out some other shops to get an idea of the kind of designs we liked. Sim Siang Choon has a lot of variety, but apparently quite costly. Quite glad to have bought our fittings from Royal Fanco, as the owner, Henry, is very helpful and showed us a lot of samples of the newest trends and designs in toilet accessories. Prices are also quite reasonable. We also got our granite kitchen sink, cooker hood and hob from here.

4) Source out wardrobe manufacturers
Initially, Richie quoted us based on the Alumix system but I didn't like the pole system. Find that with the pole system, when stacking clothes, they are likely to topple since there would be no side backing supporting them. Currently, the market leader in customised wardrobes is Closet Design but find that they are a bit pricey. Managed to source another supplier at a home lifestyle fair at Expo called Closet Robe. Yes, it sounds kinda similar to Closet Design, cos it is set up by ex-employees of Closet Design. Our design consultant, Eugene Soh, was very helpful and even went to the extra mile of sending us home after we had a particularly late meeting discussing the wardrobe layout. We included a vanity table within the closet which helps save some space in the master bedroom. Pretty excited to see the end results!

5) Ordered our aircon
At the same fair, Joe managed to source out an aircon supplier, Kun Seng, which may be a neighbourhood supplier but is quite reputable and offered reasonable prices as well. So, do check out of these fairs, usually held at Singapore Expo, as you can find some good suppliers. Some of these suppliers also offer innovative products like shoe cabinets with space-efficient stacking systems, clothes hanging racks, etc.

So far so good! Things have been going well though a few delays here and there. I must credit the smooth process to my darling Joe, whose proficiency in Hokkien has helped to endear contractors to us and move things along! Dear dear, you are the best! Many thanks goes to Jared too for providing lots of good advice and great contacts too!

Amazon Kindle

This year, the "Nintendo Wii" was the hottest toy of the season. Our church's very own drama made mention of it some three or four times. I played it at the Christmas carnival too and it was really fun! Other than the Wii, there is PSP, XBox 360 and other techie toys. Of course, not forgetting the iPhone too. Honestly, I am not crazy for any of the above mentioned gadgets. But I came across the Amazon Kindle and I would love to get it if it was available in Singapore - not just the device itself but the whole system of how it works. See below for a review by CNET on the Kindle.

Basically, it's an eBook reader but what's revolutionary about it is it can be connected wirelessly (and FOC) to the Amazon store through cellphone networks so you can easily purchase eBooks on the device anywhere anytime, have it downloaded with one click and start reading immediately. Amazon has also made the prices very affordable, charging New York Times bestsellers and new releases at US$9.99. You can also subscribe to newspapers, magazines and blogs and the content will be delivered to the device instantly once available. There are also some nifty extras, like an in-built dictionary so you can check out meanings of words, and connection to Wikipedia to get more info on topics of interest. You can also adjust font size for your own reading pleasure.

It's lightweight and it reads like a book as there is no backlight. Just imagine the possibilities! You no longer have to lug thick paperbacks around since the device can hold every page! What would sweeten the deal is if you can "borrow" books from the library and have it delivered directly to your Kindle.

Currently, it is only available in USA, cost quite a bit and still needs tweaking. But it is definitely one techie toy that I would actually consider buying!

Hougang Nest (Before)

Finally got our keys on 12/12/2007! Went down to our future nest with Richie, our contractor. He told us the place was very well-maintained! You can see from the pics that the place is quite clean too! All the walls are currently plain simple white but you shall see us transform it to a glorious home!

Here's the view of my place from the entrance

Moving House

Moving house was one of the highlights of the year! I have NEVER moved house before in all my life so it was a real big event for the whole family! Planning for the move was a big project. We planned about 2 months before - charting the activities for the weeks to come and spending almost every Sun looking for new furnishings. Everything was kind of overwhelming at first but as we went along, things became smoother.

I think the biggest headache when it comes to moving house is packing! But take this chance to clear your stuff and be ruthless about it. If you find stuff you haven't missed for so many years, it shows you won't miss them if you throw them away! If you do not bear to throw stuff away, you can donate to Salvation Army or give things away on Sgfreecycle. I gave away quite a lot of old books and bags through Sgfreecycle and the recipients were all extremely grateful.

You can find much info online on how to pack for house moving. Basically, be very organised when you pack as it will help a great deal when you move in to your new place. I bought different coloured markers to indicate different rooms on the carton boxes and numbered them too. And I had a clipboard with a masterlist that listed the specific items that went into each box. So when the movers came, it was really easy for them to move the right boxes into the respective rooms and when we needed to find certain items, I just checked my list and could easily locate the item.

We didn't intend to bring much of our existing furniture so we generously gave away our furniture to the new owner who was only too happy to receive them. This was one less issue to think about - disposal of furniture. From what I know, you can get the town council to get workers to help you remove your old furniture. However, that meant that we had to spend time getting new furniture!

We didn't get the keys to our new place yet so when we went shopping, a lot was based on gut feel as to whether the furniture could fit. Thank goodness majority did but I highly recommend that you measure your place before you go furniture shopping! For example, we bought 2 coffee tables for the master bedroom but there was no room to fit two. In the end, one was placed in the living room as a side table!

I scanned the Saturday Life section every week to check out on good deals and find out where the furniture outlets were. We bought our furniture from Lorenzo, Cellini, OM, IKEA and some shops at The Furniture Mall. Furniture shopping was quite fun at first but I think I burnt out later! Perhaps we were in a hurry to see as many shops as possible and it became very tiring and exhausting. Do start your own furniture shopping early. Walk around and have a feel of what you want then come out with a detailed list and shop around!

If you are looking for mattresses, do try Serta mattress. I bought mine from a shop at The Furniture Mall. It's not a Serta Sleep Center per se as it sells other brands as well and I got a very good price for my mattress! Go to SleepPost located on the 1st floor. The lady, Sharon, was very friendly and accommodating as well.

The forums on Singapore Brides helped a great deal too. I was able to find out about a storeroom rack supplier online, I gave them a call that very day, they came by to take measurements and the storeroom rack was up the very next week! Check out Yee Sin, they have been in the business for a very long time, apparently they are the pioneers of such racks.

As for lightings, we got all of our lights at Chan Huat. The lady who served us was very helpful and gave us good advice. The prices were pretty reasonable and once again a recommendation from the online forum.

The weeks before moving in, there was painting, polishing of the floors, chemical wash of the toilet bowls, aircon servicing and other minor repairs done. Delivery of furniture also kicked in and just a word of advice, delivery guys don't always come at the allocated time. Sometimes they come much earlier, expecting you to be there and sometimes they come very late. Try to specify for them to call you an hour before reaching but even then, don't expect them to actually do it.

The week before the actual move was stressful. Everyday I would go straight home after work just to pack, pack, pack. There were carton boxes all around and little space to move. Everyday I would just wish that the boxes would magically fill up on their own. Mum was also spending all her evenings transferring our hundreds of photos from the small albums to the big albums. Nis and Adriel also came by to help. We spent Deepavali packing and packing and cleaning and cleaning..

When THE DAY came, there were still a few things not packed. But when the strong, able-bodied guys from The Helping Hand came round, they wasted no time, helping us to tape up the remaining boxes and swiftly bringing down our 40 boxes and other loose items. They were very professional and I highly recommend them. They charge a fixed amount per lorry per trip and you can get more details by giving them a call.

Upon reaching our new place, they were also very brisk, shifting all the boxes to the respective rooms, properly labelled by yours truly. The whole moving process took maybe 1.5 hours! It was that fast! Then the other tedious part, unpacking! But I guess we had the momentum and in my mind, I had already decided where each item was going. Over the next week or so, we slowly unpacked the remaining boxes.

I am SO GLAD that everything is OVER and I can now happily blog away on my experiences and say it is truly HOME SWEET HOME!

The Wonder Years

Caught an episode of my favourite sitcom ever, The Wonder Years. I remember watching it during my primary school years and I could really relate to it cos I was around the same age of the main character, Kevin Arnold. And it brought me to another world that was unfamiliar to me through the experiences of this all American family. I guess I also really liked how each episode ended off nicely with a meaningful takeaway.

If the DVD box set ever comes out, I would love to get my hands on it!

See below for the intro section of every episode. It brings back lots of memories. =)

Christmas 2007

Christmas is a time of celebration, salvation and reconciliation!

Celebrations started early this month.. first up was my poly frens' gathering at Magma German Bistro. We haven't met up for a long time.. almost a year perhaps!! Had a simple gift exchange and was blessed with a nice belt from Ying Ying! Thanks gal!

Shared some extremely 'porky' pork knuckles... there were 3 'little pork feet' on the plate, we were joking that we will have nightmares seeing little pork legs chasing us in our sleep!

Not forgetting Christmas cg with the very exciting gift exchange! Some people are just destined to get girly stuff although they are grown men! Hee! I really enjoyed the Christmas carol game where we had to belt out Christmas carols. You realised how well (or not well) you know your Christmas carols!

Then, had dinner with the ET Leaders at Pepperoni Pizzeria at Greenwood Ave, quite a nice place but quite out of the way. The family size pizza was HUGE! Check out its size in the pic! I was again very blessed! Garvin blessed me with $50 Wisma Atria vouchers! Not too difficult to find ya, Garv? =p Really moving to hear all their speeches.. wish I could be a bigger part of everything they did this year..

In office, though there weren't any Christmas decor, the CEM staff came by and sang carols.. quite a nice gesture from them to spread the holiday mood! It's quite sweet of them, and there was even guitar accompaniment! They even sent us a special email greeting with the pic they took with us.

In Joe's office, they even had a Christmas decor contest and I heard that they were very creative, making fake snow, making Rudolph and a sleigh of presents, hanging a toy train set from the ceiling and others... wow! It's the little touches that create the holiday atmosphere. For my dept, it's the numerous chocolates, calendars and cakes from our suppliers and vendors that bring the Christmas mood!

We were treated to a buffet lunch at Oscar's @ Conrad by our big boss. The buffet was not too bad, especially liked the beef yakitori and the sashimi! Yum! But still find it a bit pricey for the quantity and quality of food. Big boss was also thoughtful enough to get individual gifts for each one of us. She blessed me with a CD of Christian songs called "Enter into love" by Mercy Pew. It was even specially autographed by the composer and lead singer.

Then for my own dept lunch, went to one of my boss' fav restaurants, Jade @ Fullerton Hotel. It was a good time of chatting and relaxing though we all needed several reminders to not talk about work!

Of course, Christmas is not Christmas without the multiple Christmas services. Great drama, power-packed preaching and over 50,000 people attending the services! The best part was the lighting the candles! Yes, in the midst of darkness, remember the light within us combined is more powerful than the darkness!

Finally, had a fun-filled family gathering on Christmas Day with my aunt and cousins, nieces and nephews! Shall just end with some pictures to relive the fun time we had!

Monkeying around in the kitchen!

Adults waiting for something to happen...

From the top: someone's leg, log cakes, 'floury' pancakes, BANG! cards...

Mee Goreng, spicy!

Chili crab!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Carilyn's Wedding (Part 2)

Talking about wedding sabos... there are cruel ones and there are fun ones. Cruel ones include any one of the following:

1) Getting the groom and brothers to stand for a number of seconds on a tray of eggs
2) Having them melt a huge block of ice with just their feet
3) Asking them to wash their feet in a basin of water and then getting them to drink the water
4) Quizzing them on a number of questions related to the bride and if they get them wrong, their face gets pinched by a clothes peg. What's special about these pegs are they are attached by strings onto the gate. So when the guys are not looking or distracted, some very "kind soul" will pull open the door!!! My fren has done this merciless act several times and seen precious skin trapped by the clothes peg! Awwww!
5) Eat weird stuff like concoctions comprising eggs, wasabi, chilli padis, ginger, garlic, etc.. At Carilyn's wedding, wasabi concentrate was frozen with crickets and bugs bought from Golden Mile. These ice-cubes were tough to eat cos they were cold frozen and you can't just swallow them quickly. You just gotta let them melt slowly in your mouth....

Then we have the fun and harmless sabos. They let everyone have a good laugh and nothing is sacrificed in the process. Of course, fun-loving and sporty guys are needed in the mix. Some fun sabos:
1) Having one of the guys put on intense red nail polish and lipstick and act as an actress in an Indian movie. So the guys gotta prance and dance around a coconut tree
2) For Carilyn's wedding, we got the guys to sing her favourite song, the Doraemon song all the way from the 1st floor. And when in the house, the groom is supposed to come up with a story stringing some random words including "Doraemon" and each time "Doraemon" is uttered, the brother gotta do a little Doraemon tune and song.

Then we have the ang pows which can range from the very creative to the very irritating. For our first ang pow from Kevin, we got a small slip of printed quotation, something that says, "Love is patient.. or love is priceless..." Please, talk is cheap, show us the money!! Then some smart brothers give ang pows stuffed with tissue paper, newspaper.. and if the sisters have been harassed enough to open the gate, they may just let the guys in without checking! Trust me, it has happened before! Well, all in all, it should be a time of fun and laughter and a great conversation topic when reliving the events of the day.

The wedding ceremony was sweet, especially with special performances from Music Miners, the choir Carilyn was a part of in university and Kevin who changed the words of Amazing Grace for a special dedication to Carilyn. Then of course, the interesting video which showed Kevin in his "former glory"! The speeches were heart-warming, with not a dry eye in the house!

The wedding dinner was held at The Legends, Fort Canning and it was God's blessing that it didn't rain. We were busy helping out at the reception counter, allocating seats to the various guests. Hmm.. wonder if there was a better way to smoothen the process. We din know half of their many colleagues and relatives and locating their names took some effort. Shall brainstorm some good efficient ways for my own wedding!

To sum everything up, it was a great wedding and I wish Kevin and Carilyn all the best in their future together!

An Angel's Story by Max Lucado

In this classic Christmas story, Max Lucado pulls back the curtain and imagines the cosmic drama that accompanied that very first Christmas…from the perspective of an angel.

“Gabriel.”

Just the sound of my King’s voice stirred my heart. I left my post at the entryway and stepped into the throne room. To my left was the desk on which sat the Book of Life. Ahead of me was the throne of Almighty God. I entered the circle of unceasing Light, folded my wings before me to cover my face, and knelt before Him. “Yes, my Lord?”

“You have served the kingdom well. You are a noble messenger. Never have you flinched in duty. Never have you flagged in zeal.”

I bowed my head, basking in the words. “Whatever You ask, I’ll do a thousand times over, my King,” I promised.

“Of that, I have no doubt, dear messenger.” His voice assumed a solemnity I’d never heard Him use. “But your greatest work lies ahead of you. Your next assignment is to carry a gift to Earth. Behold.”

I lifted my eyes to see a necklace—a clear vial on a golden chain—dangling from His extended hand.

My Father spoke earnestly, “Though empty, this vial will soon contain My greatest gift.” …Handing me the necklace, He explained, “This vial will contain the essence of Myself; a Seed to be placed in the womb of a young girl. Her name is Mary. She lives among My chosen people. The fruit of the Seed is the Son of God. Take it to her.”

“But how will I know her?” I asked.

“Don’t worry. You will.”

I could not comprehend God’s plan, but my understanding was not essential. My obedience was. I lowered my head, and He draped the chain around my neck. Amazingly, the vial was no longer empty. It glowed with Light.

“Jesus. Tell her to call My Son Jesus.”

--------------------------------------

The Father whispered to me. I heard Him as if at my side. “Go, Gabriel: go and tell Mary.”

On a wave of worship I flew, this time alone. I circled through the clouds and over the ground. Below me was the city where Mary was born. The Father was right; I knew her in an instant. Her heart had no shadow. Her soul was as pure as any I’ve seen.

I made the final descent. “Mary.” I kept my voice low so as not to startle her.

She turned but saw nothing. Then I realized I was invisible to her. I waved my wings before my body and incarnated. She covered her face at the Light and shrank into the protection of the doorway.

“Don’t be afraid,” I urged.

The minute I spoke, she looked up toward the sky. Again I was amazed.

I praised my Father for His wisdom. Her heart is so flawless, so willing. “Greetings. God be with you.”

Her eyes widened, and she turned as if to run. “Mary, you have nothing to fear. You have found favor with God. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call His name Jesus. He will be great. He will be called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; He will rule Jacob’s house forever—no end, ever, to His kingdom.”

Though she was listening, she was puzzled.

“But how? I’ve never slept with a man.”

Before I spoke I looked up into the heavens. The Father was standing, giving me His blessing.

I continued, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God. Nothing, you see, is impossible with God.”

Mary looked at me, then up into the sky. For a long time she gazed into the blueness, so long that I, too, looked up. Did she see the angels? Did the heavens open? I do not know. But I do know when I looked back at her, she was smiling.

“Yes, I see it all now: I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.”

As she spoke, a Light appeared in her womb.

----------------------------------------------

The King walked over and reached for the book. He turned it toward Lucifer and commanded, “Come, Deceiver, read the name of the One who will call your bluff. Read the name of the One who will storm your gates.”

Satan rose slowly off his haunches. Like a wary wolf, he walked a wide circle toward the desk until he stood before the volume and read the word:

“Immanuel?” he muttered to himself, then spoke in a tone of disbelief. “God with us?” For the first time the hooded head turned squarely toward the face of the Father. “No. Not even You would do that. Not even You would go so far.”

“You’ve never believed me, Satan.”

“But Immanuel? The plan is bizarre! You don’t know what it’s like on Earth! You don’t know how dark I’ve made it. It’s putrid. It’s evil. It’s…”

“IT IS MINE,” proclaimed the King. “AND I WILL RECLAIM WHAT IS MINE. I WILL BECOME FLESH. I WILL FEEL WHAT MY CREATURES FEEL. I WILL SEE WHAT THEY SEE.”

“But what of their sin?”

“I will bring mercy.”

“What of their death?”

“I will give life.”

Satan stood speechless.

God spoke, “I love my children. Love does not take away the beloved’s freedom. But love takes away fear. And Immanuel will leave behind a tribe of fearless children. They will not fear you or your hell.”

Satan stepped back at the thought. His retort was childish. “Th-th-they will too!”

“I will take away all sin. I will take away death. Without sin and without death, you have no power.”

Around and around in a circle Satan paced, clenching and unclenching his wiry fingers. When he finally stopped, he asked a question that even I was thinking. “Why? Why would You do this?”

The Father’s voice was deep and soft. “Because I love them.”

--------------------------------------------------------------

We were a wreath of Light around the stable, a necklace of diamonds around the structure. Every angel had been called from his post for the coming, even Michael. None doubted God would, but none knew how He could, fulfill his promise.

I’ve heated the water!”

“No need to yell, Joseph I hear you fine.”

Mary would have heard had Joseph whispered. The stable was even smaller than Joseph had imagined but the innkeeper was right- it was clean. I started to clear out the sheep and cow, but Michael stopped me. “The Father wants all of creation to witness the moment.”

Mary cried out and gripped Joseph’s arm with one hand and a feed trough with the other. The thrust in her abdomen lifted her back, and she leaned forward.

“Is it time?” Joseph asked.

She shot back a glance, and he had his answer.

Within moments the Awaited One was born. I was privileged to have a position close to the couple, only a step behind Michael. We both gazed into the wrinkled face of the infant. Joseph had placed hay in a feed trough, giving Jesus his first bed.

All of God was in the infant. Light encircled His face and radiated from His tiny hands. The very glory I had witnessed in His throne room now burst through His skin.

I felt we should sing but did not know what. We had no song. We had no verse. We had never seen the sight of God in a baby. When God had made a star, our words had roared. When He had delivered His servants, our tongues had flown with praise. Before His throne, our songs never ended. But what do you sing to God in a feed trough?

In that moment a wonderful thing happened. As we looked at the baby Jesus, the darkness lifted. Not the darkness of the night, but the darkness of the mystery. Heaven’s enlightenment engulfed the legions.

Our minds were filled with the Truth we had never before known. We became aware for the first time of the Father’s plan to rescue those who bear His name.

Sweet-smelling Blessings

Recently my colleague, Jasmine, blessed me with a tube of Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream. It smells really nice, when you first apply it, there's a very refreshing citrus smell. As your skin absorbs the cream, there's a faint ginger fragrance. It doesn't give a greasy feel but your skin feels really soft after application. Read what the Origins site says about the product:

"A relaxing sensation spreads all over you as tangy Ginger embraces your body while skin-nourishing Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Rice Bran Oil and Apricot Kernel Oil invisibly surround weary, dreary skin in softness. All the while, citrusy-crisp scent of lush, lighthearted Lemon, Lime and Bergamot lifts listless spirits." Don't u feel like getting your hands on it already?

My mum also recently blessed me with a bottle of Paul Smith Rose perfume. I do like rose fragrances. Some people find it too 'girly' but I think when it is blended with other 'stronger' ingredients, it shows off its feminine edginess. I really like Stella McCartney Stella. It uses Rose, mixed with Amber, Mandarin and Peony Flower. It is a clear "contrast between the freshness and softness of the rose, and the dark sensuality of amber." I also bought The Body Shop's Cassis Rose. It is more fruity with raspberry and blackcurrant notes.

For Paul Smith Rose, it is infused with the actual Paul Smith Rose, a rose specially cultivated by Paul Smith's wife for his birthday. There are also touches of Turkish rose oil, green tea, violet and magnolia flowers. It smells airy and fresh.

Doesn't it feel great to smell great?

2007 Word of the Year

Stumbled upon this when I was checking out the meaning of some words online - Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year. In my mind, I was quite sure the word would be 'facebook', but it was another word, kinda related to technology, commonly used in gaming circles. It is the word 'w00t', with 2 zeros in the middle. This exclamation is also an acronym for "we owned the other team".

w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"
w00t!
I won the contest!

It is interesting how new words are being created everyday and added to our everyday vocabulary. But it is even more fascinating that dictionaries are acknowledging how technology is leading to the creation of hybrid words, made up of letters and numbers.

Well, second on the list is none other than 'facebook'. It is not just a noun to describe the social networking site but also as a verb describing the various actions you can engage in on Facebook, for example searching for friends, adding friends to your list, etc.

But I feel that the Facebook fad is kinda dying off. Personally, I dun engage in the vampire biting, racing and poking. I am more interested in applications that are actually useful and allow people to get to know me better and for me to know others better. I read somewhere that it allows people to keep in touch yet in a less intrusive way than MSN. Quite true.

Have you facebooked today?

Under the Fig Tree

Another one of my overdue posts..

Dr John Avanzini came and preached in church and it was awesome! He really brings financial revelations which are super mind-blowing! This time around, he shared from John 1:47-51 on the little known character, Nathanael. He did something under the fig tree that Jesus made special mention of and called him one "in whom is no deceit." Something that caused heaven to open. What exactly was it that he did?

Well, Dr John brought us to Malachi 3 and showed us that the one thing that opens heaven over us is our giving. So Nathanael was under the fig tree, where no one could see, planning his finances, thinking of how he would be using his money, setting aside an amount for God. He put aside his own needs to put God first.

What was really exciting was offering time. The offering envelope was specially designed with a picture of a fig tree on the flap. Dr John got us to hold up the offering envelope in such a way that our thumb was positioned just under the fig tree. He said our thumb represents us under the fig tree and what is it that we would do under the fig tree??

Dr John, in his usual manner, challenged us and also said that perhaps some of us should increase our building fund pledge. I was very challenged and I did what I had to do. All along I had desired and wished to give a certain sum this year but it was really beyond me. When it was time to pledge, I still pledged a big sum but it wasn't that amount that was my heart's desire to give. Now that God opened a way for me financially and I was given the chance to pledge again, I knew I had to do it!

And I am so glad I did! Just in Dec, I have already received a blessing of 10 times the total amount I pledged! God has indeed never short-changed me! This year was especially tough since I am getting married soon. It is what Jiahui dubbed "a famine year", but I remember what she shared about Isaac in Gen 26, he sowed in the year of the famine and "reaped in the same year a hundredfold." According to what Joe explained to me, hundred fold is $X to the power of 100!! Just imagine that! I am awaiting for hundredfold blessing of my pledge amount this year!!

Just a word of encouragement to all out there who have not received the harvest: keep on pressing on! I remember in secondary school, I often went without food during recess or bought the cheapest biscuit or cake to save up more money. I'm sure my frens thought of me as queer and weird but I know I did the right thing. Even Nicholas Goh and his wife Lillian had to eat cup noodles for one whole year before things turned around for them financially so keep on sowing and you will reap a great harvest!

Carilyn's Wedding (Part 1)

Had many blog-able events this few months, such as saying bye to my beloved Aljunied Crescent home, moving house (finally!), getting the keys to my new place, reno preparation, gatherings and Carilyn's wedding. However, just never got down to blogging but have decided that when I am freer, will do some posting of older events. Basically, it's to keep a record of the things that have happened to me. Hopefully, once I catch up with all the older entries, I will start posting more regularly!

First up, we have Carilyn's wedding, the most recent event and thus, the easiest to blog about. It's really ironic in a way how my dearest sec sch fren, who declared at the tender age of 15 that she would never get married, would be the first of my group of sec sch frens actually getting properly married! Hee, so never say never...

We had a fun and exciting Hens' Nite on a yacht. We rode on the yacht onto the open sea and then berched at Pulau Hantu Besar. Btw, Pulau Hantu Besar means "Big Ghost Island". It was really dark but we definitely did not see anything strange excepts rats and bats (!!) Anyway, we were served a wonderful BBQ dinner that the crew cooked for us and then fun chit chatting away until.... the coast guards came! This coast guard came up to us, after spending a long time talking to the captain, and saying in all seriousness, "You need permission to stay on this island, you all can be arrested right now!" Woah! Thank goodness he was nice enough to let us finish our meal and stay for a while longer. It was indeed a memorable time!

Actually, I have not really heard of the concept of Hens' nite. Apparently it is a common practice in Western culture. I would definitely organise a Hens' nite for all my jie meis to have some fun together and plot the sabo for the brothers!!

Talking about sabos... I will elaborate about that in my next post.. now it's time to sleep!
